What to Wear for Fall Photos: Texture

I love seeing beautiful textures in clothing, especially when I am photographing someone wearing that piece. Try to choose outfits that have different textures from each other. You do not want everyone in the same fabric! There are so many beautiful options – flannel, wool, cotton, denim, corduroy, velvet, lace, and more. Additionally accessories are a wonderful way to add texture. A blanket to sit on or wrap up in, a hat, scarf, or jewelry can all add so much visual interest. Jackets, sweaters, and coats are also beautiful layers that add texture and keep everyone warm on a chilly fall day!

What to Wear for Fall Photos: Color

Something important to point out when thinking about what to wear for fall photos is that you do not want to be too matchy-matchy with color. Keep in mind your location – what will the colors be like where your session is taking place? You do not want to blend into the background! I love it when clients have one or two people in patterns and others in solid colors. Furthermore be sure to use neutral colors to balance things out. Notice how groups who do an incredible job with clothing have outfits and colors that work together without being too closely matched. That is the sweet spot!

Fall Photography Style Guide: Comfort

One of the MOST IMPORTANT things when choosing clothing is to make sure everyone is COMFORTABLE! I have so many sensory issues myself and I know that if I am uncomfortable it is all I can think about. Kids and adults alike need to feel good in what they are wearing in order to relax and have fun in front of the camera. So if you do not get anything else out of this fall photography style guide, get this – BE COMFY!

What to Wear for Fall Photos: Quick Tips

Let’s quickly review what we have covered in this fall photography style guide. We do not want to be too matchy-matchy. It is extremely important that everyone is comfortable. Also do your best to incorporate a variety of textures into everyone’s clothing. Here are a few more quick tips – do not wear clothing with words or logos on them. No neon colors! Keep it classic. Ask yourself – do you see this style of clothing still being worn thirty years from now? Another thing people often forget is shoes – be sure everyone has appropriate and attractive shoes that go with their outfit. Furthermore the biggest tip of them all is to book with me so I can send you my complete Style Guide!!
