Fall Photography Style Guide

style inspiration for fall photos

Fall is the one of the best times to do some family photos! Whether you are doing a mini session, full session, or even a home session it’s important to be ready in what you’re wearing! That is why I created this Fall Photography Style Guide. This is a resource for my clients and for those of you who are not.

Fall Photography Style Guide: Texture

I love see beautiful textures in clothing, especially when I’m photographing someone wearing that piece. Try to choose outfits that have different textures to them. You don’t want everyone in the same fabric. There are so many options of beautiful textures as well. You can choose flannel, wool, cotton, denim, corduroy, velvet, lace, etc. Another way to add texture is with accessories. You can also bring along a blanket to sit on or wrap up in, a hat, scarf, jewelry, etc. Jackets, sweaters, and coats can also be beautiful layers to add texture and keep you warm if it’s a chilly day!

Fall Photography Style Guide: Color

Something I want to point out in the fall photography style guide is that you don’t want to be too matchy-matchy when it comes to color and clothing. You should keep in mind your location. What will the colors be like where your session is taking place? You don’t want to blend in with the background. I love it when a family has one or two people in patterns and others in solid color. Be sure to use neutral colors to balance colors out as well. You will see I have added many photos throughout this of fall photography sessions of mine where families did an incredible job with clothing. Notice how their outfits and colors work together without being too closely matched.

Fall Photography Style Guide: Comfort

One of the MOST IMPORTANT things when choosing clothing is to make sure everyone is COMFORTABLE! I have so many sensory issues myself, I know if I’m uncomfortable it’s all I’ll be able to think about. Kids and adults alike need to feel good in what they are wearing in order to relax and have fun in front of the camera. If you don’t get anything else out of this Fall Photography Session Guide, get this: BE COMFY!

Fall Photography Style Guide Quick Tips

Let’s quickly review what we’ve learned in this Fall Photography Style Guide. We don’t want to be too matchy-matchy. It’s extremely important that everyone is comfortable. Do your best to incorporate a variety of textures into everyones clothing. Here are a few more tips. Don’t wear clothing with words or logos on them. No neon colors! Keep it classic. Do you see the style of clothing still being worn thirty years from now? Another thing people often forget is the shoes! Be sure everyone has appropriate and attractive shoes that go with their outfit. The biggest tip of them all is to book with me so I can send you my complete Style Guide!!
